Cannabutter Brownies Recipe: A Dosing-First Method
This cannabutter brownies recipe reverses the usual order: compute the dose first, then bake. Most posts start with "use half a cup of cannabutter" without asking how strong that half cup is. The pan below is portioned from the butter's strength, so the milligrams per piece are decided before the oven is on.
The method assumes you already have a finished batch of butter. If you do not, start with our machine-method cannabutter recipe — decarb at 240°F for 30–40 minutes, then infuse in butter at 160–190°F for 1–2 hours — and come back once the butter is set and labeled.

A 16-cut pan cooled, cut, and sitting beside the countertop machine that made the butter.
How much cannabutter for brownies? Start with the butter, not the mix
How much cannabutter goes into brownies is a dosing question dressed up as a recipe question. A boxed mix typically calls for half a cup of oil or melted butter, and swapping that half cup for cannabutter one-for-one is the default full-strength version. Whether that is sensible depends on what is in your jar.
Three inputs set the pan's strength: the flower weight and listed package percentage (an estimate — real lab percentages vary), what fraction of the butter batch you use, and how you cut the pan. A 16-cut pan (4 by 4) halves the per-piece figure versus an 8-cut pan from the same batter.
The practical lever is blending. If full-strength math gives 34 mg per piece and you wanted something near the 10 mg single-serving reference used in Colorado's regulated edibles market, replace part of the cannabutter with regular butter — half and half halves the ceiling. The brownies bake the same either way.
Worked example: mg THC per brownie from a 7 g batch
This is the calculation the rest of the recipe depends on. It uses the 0.877 molar-mass factor for converting THCA to THC, and every result below is a ceiling: it assumes complete decarb and complete transfer into the fat, which a home kitchen never achieves.
Take a butter batch made from 7 g of flower listed at 18% THCA:
- THCA in the jar: 7,000 mg × 0.18 = 1,260 mg THCA.
- THC ceiling after decarb: 1,260 × 0.877 ≈ 1,105 mg THC in the full butter batch.
- THC in the brownie pan: a boxed mix using half a cup of that butter (half of a one-cup batch) carries about 550 mg ceiling.
- mg THC per brownie: 550 ÷ 16 pieces ≈ 34 mg per brownie, as an upper limit.
Two things follow. First, 34 mg is a strong piece by any standard, so cutting into 16 does not by itself make it mild. Second, the fix is in the fat ratio, not the knife: a quarter cup of this butter plus a quarter cup of regular butter drops the ceiling to about 17 mg per piece, before real-world losses. For other batch sizes, run the same steps through the cannabutter dosage calculator rather than scaling this example by feel, and compare against the cannabutter dosing chart.
One more caution on the inputs: the 18% figure is doing a lot of work here. Package percentages vary, decarb completeness depends on holding temperature where the herb sits (see the decarb temperature chart for the reference band), and some cannabinoids stay in the strained plant matter. All three push the real number below the ceiling, by an amount you cannot compute at home.
Cannabutter brownies recipe (boxed mix or scratch)
This bakes one 8-inch square pan, 16 pieces. Total time is about 1 hour with butter already made.
Ingredients:
- 1 boxed brownie mix (about 18 oz, the standard 8-inch-pan size), or your scratch recipe's dry ingredients
- Half a cup of fat total, split between cannabutter and regular butter per your dose math
- Eggs, water, and salt per the box or scratch recipe
- Parchment or foil for lining the pan

The blend is the only lever that moves the per-piece figure; the brownies bake the same either way.
Method:
- Heat the oven to the temperature on the box, usually 325–350°F, with the rack in the center. Line the pan so the slab lifts out for clean cutting.
- Stir the set cannabutter smooth before measuring — it firms unevenly in the cold.
- Melt the portioned cannabutter with the regular butter (if blending) over low heat, then cool until warm. Hot fat scrambles eggs; warm fat blends cleanly.
- Whisk the fat with eggs and water per the package directions, add the dry mix, and stir until just combined. Overmixing develops structure you do not want in a brownie.
- Spread the batter level in the lined pan — an uneven layer bakes into uneven pieces. Bake until a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs rather than wet batter.
- Cool fully in the pan, lift out, and cut 4 by 4. Divide the pan total by 16 and write the per-piece ceiling and the batch date on the container.
The infusion step that made the butter matters more than anything done at the brownie stage: cannabinoids move into fat during the long, low hold, not during the bake. A 2-in-1 Decarboxylator & Infuser 3oz holds both stages — the dry decarb band and the 160–190°F infusion band — in one canister, but the brownie instructions do not change either way.
Boxed brownie mix cannabutter method: what changes, and what does not
Almost nothing changes, which is the point of using a boxed mix for a first dosed batch. A standard mix removes cocoa, flour, and leavening variables, so the only number that moves between attempts is the butter blend. Use the box's fat quantity, temperature, and time as printed.
Three small adjustments are worth making:
- Melt, don't oil-swap blindly. Boxes written for vegetable oil assume a room-temperature liquid. Measure the cannabutter melted and cooled, not as a hard cold block.
- Do not extend the bake to "activate" anything. Activation happened (or did not) during decarb, before the mix was opened. Extra oven time dries the crumb without adding strength.
- Prefer fudgy-style mixes. Cannabis butter carries a mild herbal note that fudgy chocolate covers better than cakey styles.
Scratch recipes follow the same logic: keep total fat at the stated amount and change only the cannabutter-to-butter ratio. Changing total fat changes texture; changing the blend changes strength.
Cannabutter brownie dosage: portioning and waiting
Cannabutter brownie dosage fails in two familiar ways: eating a second piece before the first has arrived, and assuming every square in the pan is identical. Edibles take longer to onset than inhaled cannabis and the effect lasts longer, so the rule is one portion, then wait — not a second helping at the hour mark. Do not plan on driving the same night.
Portion discipline has a mechanical side too. Even well-mixed batter deposits fat unevenly and hand-cut squares are never exactly equal, so treat the per-piece ceiling as a pan average, not a promise about any single square. Eat from one labeled batch at a time, and keep the container out of reach of children and pets. If you would rather fix the portion before baking than after, the cannabutter cookies recipe divides the same batch into counted, equal scoops.

Fudgy crumb under a thin crackled top: the cut edge is square, the dose still is not.
When the pan goes wrong
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next batch |
|---|---|---|
| Pieces feel far stronger than the math | Full-strength half cup from a strong batch; uneven squares | Blend with regular butter; weigh the slab and cut by grid, not by eye |
| Greasy or separated crumb | Too much total fat, or hot melted butter shocked the eggs | Keep total fat at the box amount; cool melted butter until warm |
| Strong herbal flavor | Butter was squeezed hard at straining, or infusion ran hot | Drain cheesecloth without pressing; hold the infusion at 160–190°F |
| Dry, cakey result | Overbaked to "activate" | Trust the box time; activation is a decarb-stage matter |
Conclusion: the cannabutter brownies recipe in one line
A measured cannabutter brownies recipe is butter math plus a boxed mix: convert flower weight and percentage to a ceiling with the 0.877 factor, choose the cannabutter-to-butter blend that puts the 16-cut per-piece figure where you want it, and bake the box as printed. The brownies are the easy half; the arithmetic is the recipe.
The procedure, step by step
Compute the ceiling for your butter batch
Multiply flower weight by its listed THCA percentage, then by 0.877 to get the maximum THC in the full butter batch. Note it as a ceiling, not a measured result.
Decide how much cannabutter goes in the pan
Translate the batch ceiling into the amount your brownie recipe calls for, usually half a cup for a boxed mix. Blend with regular butter if the per-piece math comes out stronger than you want.
Portion and melt the butter
Cut the measured cannabutter from a well-stirred, evenly set batch, melt it gently, and let it cool until warm rather than hot before it meets eggs or mix.
Mix the batter
Combine the melted butter with the boxed mix or scratch ingredients per the package or recipe directions. Stir until just combined and spread evenly in a lined 8-inch square pan.
Bake and cool before cutting
Bake at 325-350°F until a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs, typically 25-35 minutes depending on the mix and pan. Cool fully in the pan so the fat sets before portioning.
Cut into 16 and label
Cut the cooled slab into a 4 by 4 grid for 16 pieces, divide the pan total by 16 for the per-brownie ceiling, and label the container with the batch date and per-piece figure.
